The News Journal: Right-to-carry a feminist issue Gun grabbers never like to talk about self-defense. Handgun Control Inc. even says you should cower and offer no resistance. This was written by a man, and may be good advice for a man confronted by a burglar. For a woman confronted by a rapist, the advice sucks.
The average man can physically overpower the average woman; this is a biological fact. The vast majority of violent crimes are committed by men. We women should not have to depend on the men in our lives for protection, nor can we expect police to be in all places at all times.Or as Col. Colt's advertising said, "Have no fear of any man no matter what his size. When danger threatens call on me, and I shall equalize."My ability to have a gun for self-defense is central to my concept of freedom and safety in a hostile world. Anyone who tries to take that right is trying to take the only tool that makes me the physical equal of a man.
We live in a dangerous world. According to the FBI Uniform crime report for 2004, a forcible rape occurs every 5.6 minutes. One aggravated assault occurs every 36.9 seconds. There is a very real possibility that I will encounter a situation that requires me to defend myself. But how am I do to that? Without effective means of self-defense, I can be overcome by one large attacker, or by several people.
This news article is a very good description of why concealed carry should be "shall issue." I should not have to convince a bureaucrat that I have the need to defend myself.
The right of a rational, responsible, safety-conscious adult to carry a gun offers one way for women to protect themselves against violence.
